What is Applied Personality Intelligence?

Applied Personality Intelligence is validated personality science delivered as applied guidance in daily work, rather than as a one-time assessment report. It combines four elements: a single validated framework, coverage of every employee, application in the flow of work, and organization-level analytics on one common instrument.

Category terms

What is the activation gap?

The activation gap is the distance between what personality science can explain and what assessment programs actually deliver. It appears when results are generated and debriefed but never translate into changed behavior — typically visible by month six, when employees can no longer recall their results and managers no longer reference them.

Category terms

What is activation?

Activation is the point at which personality insight becomes something a person applies to real work: recognizing which of their traits help in their specific role, which create friction, and having a practical way to act on that in a conversation actually taking place.

Category terms

What is a performance support layer?

A performance support layer is software that delivers guidance at the moment of need rather than in a scheduled session. In personality science, it means insight arrives before the 1:1 or the difficult conversation, rather than being recalled from an event months earlier.

Category terms

What is an always-on development layer?

An always-on development layer is continuous development capability that operates between and beneath scheduled programs. It reaches employees whom cohort programs cannot serve and keeps shared language in use during the long intervals between formal sessions.

Category terms

What is talent optimization?

Talent optimization is a category term for aligning business strategy with people strategy across the talent lifecycle, most associated with hiring-anchored platforms. It's typically administered by HR and centered on selection, with insight flowing to HR and managers rather than to employees directly.

Category terms

What is AI coaching?

AI coaching describes software that delivers coaching guidance through automated prompts, often in chat tools or calendars. Its usefulness depends entirely on the assessment data underneath it: coaching generated from aggregated frameworks that measure different things cannot produce internally consistent advice.

What is the Five-Factor Model?

The Five-Factor Model is the scientific consensus structure of human personality: five continuous dimensions — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Emotional Stability — validated independently across cultures, languages, and measurement methods over more than 40 years of peer-reviewed research.

Framework and science terms

What is the Big Five?

The Big Five is the common name for the Five-Factor Model. The terms are used interchangeably in both research and practice.

What is the WorkPlace Big Five Profile®?

The WorkPlace Big Five Profile® is a workplace-normed personality assessment built on the Five-Factor Model, measuring 5 supertraits and 23 subtraits on continuous scales and interpreting results against the demands of work. It is published by Paradigm Personality Labs and takes about 15 minutes.

Framework and science terms

What is the difference between traits and types?

A trait is a continuous dimension a person sits somewhere along; a type is a category a person is assigned to. Trait measurement preserves the specific configuration that determines how someone works. Type assignment replaces that configuration with a shared label.

Framework and science terms

What is a supertrait?

A supertrait is one of the five broad dimensions of the Five-Factor Model. Each supertrait summarizes a cluster of narrower, correlated characteristics and describes a general tendency rather than a specific behavior.

Framework and science terms

What is a subtrait?

A subtrait is a narrower facet within a supertrait. Subtraits provide the resolution that distinguishes two people with similar supertrait scores who work very differently. The WorkPlace Big Five Profile® measures 23 subtraits across the five supertraits.

What is a categorical personality model?

A categorical personality model sorts people into a fixed number of discrete groups, typically four to sixteen. Categorical models are memorable and quick to teach. Their structural limitation is that within-category differences disappear, so two people sharing a category are described identically.

Framework and science terms

What is a trait continuum?

A trait continuum is the scale along which a personality dimension is measured. A person's position on the continuum is their score. Continuum-based measurement allows valid comparison between any two people, which categorical assignment does not.

Is personality fixed or changeable?

Trait patterns are relatively stable in adulthood, while how a person applies them is highly changeable. This distinction underpins growth-oriented approaches to personality: the work is in configuring the work around a person's traits, not in changing the person.

The five supertraits

What is Openness (Originality)?

Openness, called Originality in the WorkPlace Big Five Profile®, describes appetite for novelty, abstraction, and change. Higher scorers gravitate toward new ideas and unproven approaches; lower scorers toward proven methods and practical application. Neither end is an advantage in general — each fits different work.

The five supertraits

What is Conscientiousness (Consolidation)?

Conscientiousness, called Consolidation in the WorkPlace Big Five Profile®, describes drive toward goals, structure, and follow-through. Higher scorers push toward completion and detail; lower scorers toward flexibility and rapid redirection. It is the most consistently studied Five-Factor dimension in workplace research.

The five supertraits

What is Extraversion at work?

Extraversion describes where a person draws energy and how they spend it socially. Higher scorers gain energy from interaction and think out loud; lower scorers gain energy from focused, independent work and often think before speaking. It describes energy source, not social skill.

The five supertraits

What is Agreeableness (Accommodation)?

Agreeableness, called Accommodation in the WorkPlace Big Five Profile®, describes how a person balances their own needs against others'. Higher scorers accommodate readily and prioritize harmony; lower scorers advocate directly and tolerate friction. It describes a negotiating posture, not warmth or likability.
