Hogan Assessments Review

Hogan Assessments is the most credible executive personality instrument in the market and, by design, not a whole-workforce tool. Its Hogan Personality Inventory is Five-Factor-based, paired with the Hogan Development Survey (derailers) and the Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory, and delivered through certified interpreters. We by Paradigm shares the same Five-Factor science and is built for the rest of the organization.

What is Hogan best at?

Executive selection and coaching. Hogan’s derailment insight—how a leader behaves under pressure—is unique in the category, its predictive validity claims are the strongest in the market, and many large enterprises have certified practitioners in-house.

What science is it built on?

The HPI measures normal personality on a Five-Factor-based model; the HDS measures eleven derailers that emerge under stress; the MVPI measures core values and drivers. Reports are dense enough that Hogan requires certification before anyone interprets them.

Where Hogan is strong

  • Gold-standard brand credibility with boards and executive committees

  • Strongest predictive validity claims in the market

  • Dark-side and derailment insight that no other instrument offers

  • Deep narrative reports for senior-leader coaching

Where Hogan runs out

  • Executive-only by design; it does not scale below the leadership tier

  • Certification is a prerequisite, which adds fixed cost and caps how fast you can scale

  • Services-heavy: total cost almost always includes coaching, debrief, and interpretation

  • No always-on platform; the insight lives in the debrief and the report

Who should choose Hogan?

Choose Hogan when the job is selecting or coaching senior leaders and you have certified practitioners or budget for them.

When is We by Paradigm the better fit?

When you want the same Five-Factor science applied to the rest of the organization, without a certification gate, in the flow of work, with organization-level analytics. Many Hogan clients run both: Hogan at the top, We everywhere else.
